A new version of the foldable Motorola Razr will be launched this year, according to the CEO of Chinese technology giant Lenovo
which now owns the brand.

The Razr is one of the brand’s most iconic mobile phones and was first launched by Motorola in 2004. It became one of the most popular flip phones of the 2000s.

Motorola revived the Razr brand in a new foldable form in 2020, becoming one of the first smartphone makers to launch a device with a bendable screen.

The Razr retains its folding feature. But instead of a hinge, like the original device, the screen can bend, allowing the phone to fold.

Lenovo CEO Yuanqing Yang told CNBC Wednesday in an interview at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, that reception to the Razr “is good” and that Motorola will launch the next version of the foldable phone “very soon.”

“I think it’s much better,” Yang said of the yet unlaunched device.

He provided very few details but said that improvements would focus on the hinge and the applications on the device. Smartphone makers from Samsung to Honor that have launched foldable phones have focused on the hinge to make sure it is robust and also does not produce a line in the screen of the device. Yang said this is where the next generation of Razr phone would see improvements. Over the last few weeks, a number of players have launched foldable smartphones for the global market including Chinese vendors Honor and Oppo.

Foldable devices accounted for only 1.1% of total smartphone shipments in 2022, according to research firm IDC, and are only expected to increase to 2.8% in 2026. But they are seen by electronics makers as a way to push in to the higher end of the smartphone market.

Yang said that the prices of foldables are quite high at the moment but will reduce in the future which could make the market bigger.

“When the technology becomes mature, then the price could go down then you can drive higher volume,” the Lenovo CEO said.

Motorola is known for experimenting with different shapes of smartphones. At MWC, the company showed off a so-called “rollable” smartphone where the display rolls up.

After a month of beta testing, Apple is releasing iOS 16.3 to iPhone users everywhere today. This update includes a new way to secure your Apple ID, changes to Emergency SOS, and more. There’s also a brand new wallpaper that Apple has designed in honor of Black History Month.

How to install iOS 16.3

iOS 16.3 and iPadOS 16.3 are available to all iPhone and iPad models starting today. You can update by heading to the Settings app, choosing General, and then choosing Software Update. If you don’t see the update right away, be sure to keep checking as it can sometimes take a few minutes to hit every iPhone and iPad. The updates are expected to be available to everyone within the hour.

Once you begin the installation process, your iPhone or iPad will download the update, then prompt you to reboot your device to finish the process. Keep in mind your device will be unusable while it reboots to install the update.

Apple is also rolling out iOS 15.7.3 for older iPhones that do not support iOS 16, as well as iOS 12.5.7 for devices that do not support iOS 13 or newer.

What’s new in iOS 16.3?

Here are the new features in iOS 16.3:

New Unity wallpaper honors Black history and culture in celebration of Black History Month

Security Keys for Apple ID allow users to strengthen the security of their account by requiring a physical security key as part of the two factor authentication sign in process on new devices

Support for HomePod (2nd generation)

Emergency SOS calls now require holding the side button with the up or down volume button and then releasing in order to prevent inadvertent emergency calls

The update also includes some bug fixes and improvements for iPhone users:

Fixes an issue in Freeform where some drawing strokes created with Apple Pencil or your finger may not appear on shared boards

Addresses an issue where the wallpaper may appear black on the Lock Screen

Fixes an issue where horizontal lines may temporarily appear while waking up iPhone 14 Pro Max

Fixes an issue where the Home Lock Screen widget does not accurately display Home app status

Addresses an issue where Siri may not respond properly to music requests

Resolves issues where Siri requests in CarPlay may not be understood correctly

Apple is developing 11.1-inch and 13-inch OLED iPad Pro models that will come out in the first quarter of 2024, display analyst Ross Young today confirmed to MacRumors.

Young has previously mentioned new OLED ‌iPad Pro‌ models planned for 2024, but this is the first time that we’ve heard about updated 11.1 and 13-inch display sizes. With larger 11.1 and 13-inch screen sizes planned for the OLED ‌iPad Pro‌ models, we could see slimmed down bezels rather than an overall change in the size of the device.

At the current time, Apple sells a 12.9-inch mini-LED ‌iPad Pro‌ and an 11-inch ‌iPad Pro‌ with a traditional LCD display, as mini-LED has continued to be reserved for the higher-end ‌iPad Pro‌ model. With the 2024 update, Apple could return to feature parity between the two ‌iPad Pro‌ models.

Apple refreshed the 11 and 12.9-inch ‌iPad Pro‌ models in October 2022, adding the M2 chip, so it would not be a surprise not to see another update until 2024. It is not yet clear if there is an intermediate update coming ahead of the transition to OLED, but Apple does not have plans to release a mini-LED 11-inch ‌iPad Pro‌, and will instead move directly to OLED for the smaller tablet.

Other sources like The Elec and DigiTimes have confirmed that Apple is developing OLED panels for larger devices like iPads and MacBook models, and the technology is expected to be ready in 2024.

Young previously said that Apple would introduce a 14.1-inch ‌iPad Pro‌ in 2023, but he walked that back today and said that such a device is no longer in the works. That said, larger iPads are still a future possibility, as The Information believes Apple is designing a 16-inch iPad and Bloomberg has confirmed Apple’s interest in bigger iPads.

The company announced that Matter compatibility has arrived to its ecosystem of phones and devices.

Matter, the smart home standard that promises to unify us all, continues its slow and steady release across platforms. Google is the next to announce compatibility for its Nest devices and Android phones.

Now you can use existing gadgets like the Nest Mini speaker, the Nest Hub Max smart display, and the Nest Wifi Pro mesh router as a base of sorts for connecting Matter smart devices. These are no longer called “hubs” but “border routers,” since they serve as indicators of the perimeter of your smart home.

Android is also getting its long-promised pairing abilities. You’ll be able to use Fast Pair to get a connected gadget on the network using the Google Home app, which is in its own little makeover stage right now. The Matter standard was officially launched in October. Though there are only a few Matter-compatible devices on the market right now—things like sensors, smart locks, and smart bulbs—we expect a torrent of compatible devices to be revealed early next year.

Google states that it’s “enabling more Nest devices with Matter” in the new year so they can act as border routers in a Matter-connected home. The company is also working on adding iOS support through the Google Home app for those opting to stay within the Google app ecosystem (Apple lets you connect to Matter devices through iOS’s Home app). And it’s partnered with Samsung, its biggest ally in smartphones, to build a “smoother” Multi-Admin experience for 2023—something that will make it easy to flip between Samsung’s SmartThings and the Google Home app.

The smart home has been pretty stagnant for the last year, partly because companies and consumers have been waiting for this new standard to pan out. We’re still not quite there, even with the big brands already supporting Matter. But we’re expecting to see all the new devices that sync up next month at CES 2023.

Apple’s iPhone 14 has spent two months on the market, so naturally, we’re racking up on rumors about next year’s iPhone 15. The latest detail describes how the next-generation of iPhone cameras will improve photography performance.

No iPhone update is complete without some improvement to the camera system, and the iPhone 15 will not be an exception. According to Nikkei Asia, Apple will rely on new sensor technology from Sony to deliver better photography with the iPhone 15.

Today’s report claims Sony’s latest sensor technology “roughly doubles the saturation signal level in each pixel” to deliver higher dynamic range than existing iPhone camera systems.

The result should be fewer photos that are oversaturated or undersaturated when there’s a huge difference between brightness in the foreground and background.

Sony’s new image sensor roughly doubles the saturation signal level in each pixel compared with conventional sensors. In other words, the sensors can capture more light and reduce overexposure or underexposure in certain settings, enabling a smartphone camera to clearly photograph a person’s face even if the subject is standing against a strong backlight.

The report goes on to explain that Sony’s latest sensor tech uses a “new semiconductor architecture which places photodiodes and transistors in separate substrate layers, allowing the sensor to add more photodiodes to the dedicated layer.”

iPhone 15 Pro will especially be a significant camera upgrade next fall. Apple is expected to introduce its first periscope lens that’s capable of delivering more optical zoom with a 90 degrees mirror system.

All iPhone 15 models are expected to switch to USB-C from Lightning, and Pro models may deliver Thunderbolt transfer speeds for moving large photo and video files quickly.

Each new iPhone 15 model will likely feature the Dynamic Island introduced on this year’s iPhone 14 Pro, but only Pro models are expected to have ProMotion and Always-On display again next year.

More recently, talk of a potential iPhone 15 Ultra with a titanium casing and a curved rear side has started. …
